Description
Large format lowercase cursive handwriting worksheet “Rainbow” letters are a favorite in the Montessori classroom. These are for student who have mastered the sandpaper letters and are ready to trace on paper. Three versions included: outline, outline with arrows, dotted line which is more abstract. All versions contain blank lined section for independent practice. This is a great way for children to get a lot of cursive tracing practice without fatigue.
Learning goals: solidify cursive letter formation, strengthen fine motor skills, improve concentration
Points of interest: every letter begins on the same bottom line, unlike print letters, creative use of colors, encourage child to make choices when possible
Pre-requisite: This template is best utilized after children have already been introduced to letter formation and their sounds such as in the Montessori language progression. Ideally they have had practice with tracing letters without a writing tool such as with sandpaper letters and sand trays, and lots of non-writing fine motor practice that has prepared the hand and grip for writing.
How to present:
- Tell the child they are going to write “Rainbow Letters” they can choose any three colors they like for each letter.
- Choose 3-4 letters at a time so they can feel successful completing a task, introduce more if they want to or feel ready.
- Observe the child’s form and note any areas they may need to correct and plan to present the correct formation at another time.
- Allow the students the choice to complete the lined section when they feel ready, provide scaffolded support by drawing the letter with a highlight marker for them to trace over.
