These cards should be used only once the student has had extensive practice with sound awareness through use of language objects, sound games, sandpaper letter tracing, and rainbow writing. This is usually around the age of 4, but could be earlier or later.
-
Present 2-3 cards at first, such as with the same beginning sound, ending sound, or middle sound or in 2nd and 3rd sound groups: -at, -ap, -og, etc.
-
Ensure the child can hear each sound, or phoneme, and identify the moveable alphabet letter that corresponds to the sound. If the child struggles during this initial presentation, simply conclude the lesson and go back to prior lessons for more practice.
-
The lesson key can also be used to track which words and sounds the child can successfully identify.
-
The children can write the words in a list or booklet, but only once their fine motor and writing skills are developed enough to do so without being discouraged.
-
Children can write words with the moveable alphabet before they can write them mechanically.
-
Writing and spelling are different cognitive processes – the moveable alphabet allows children to practice their encoding (spelling) skills without needing to write the letters themselves.
-
The moveable alphabet is a wonderful tool for reluctant writers or children with physical limitations that would prevent writing.
