Description
These DIY Red Envelope templates provide a fun and meaningful way to participate in Lunar New Year activities. They are most appropriate for Kindergarten or Lower Elementary students, although preschoolers could make this with assistance.
The downloadable file contains 11 templates featuring grayscale, color, and blank templates. They can be printed on white or red paper or cardstock. (I recommend using AstroBrights.)
The envelopes feature two phrases in Mandarin / Hanzi characters:
新年快乐/ Xīnnián kuàilè / Happy New Year
春节快乐 / Chūnjié kuàilè / Happy Spring Festival
Learning goals: practice following multi-step directions, fine motor and pre-writing skills such as cutting, push pinning, tracing, folding, and gluing.
Points of interest:
-
Children will learn about this special custom celebrated in many Asian countries through creating their own envelopes as a keepsake or to give to a friend or family member.
-
They will learn about the Chinese Zodiac and the Year of the Tiger
Ideas and tips for using these templates:
-
Choose one style of template appropriate for your age of student. Younger students may have an easier time with the thicker lines of the blank/grayscale templates.
-
While Hanzi characters have a specific stroke order, some children may wish to simply color them in or fill with glitter glue or metallic markers for a more festive look.
-
For children who are familiar with writing Chinese characters, these templates may be used for stroke order practice as well.
