Learning goals:
current events, scientific knowledge, building vocabulary, visual discrimination through noticing small differences and matching images, print or cursive letter formation, fine motor development through writing and/or coloring.
Points of interest:
-
Children enjoy learning about the natural world and knowing that the 17 year cicada is emerging in 2021 may be exciting to them (as it is in my own classroom!)
-
Children love to label, color, and create booklets – this work provides variety in the classroom for these skills.
Pre-requisite:
Nomenclature cards are appropriate for all children in the 3-6 classroom and it is up to each teacher’s discretion how to modify the cards for use. High repetition increases retention, as long as the teacher makes the repetition interesting and engaging to the child.
How to present:
-
Based on the child’s needs and skill level, consider limiting the number of cards presented. Include more cards and definition cards for children interested in more information as able.
-
Observe the child’s ability to recall the names of the parts, and then introduce matching images and words.
-
Note any areas in which a child is struggling or needs guidance and plan to adjust and re-present the work at another time.
-
While you may laminate these cards if desired, lamination is not necessary – using heavy card stock (please check your printer settings for appropriate weight card stock) and teaching your students to handle the materials with care should keep them useable for many years
- Lamination may introduce a sheen or glare on card surfaces which may be distracting or difficult for students with visual or learning differences to use successfully
- In the event a card is damaged, it can be recycled and reprinted
