Description
These printables help make a child’s first experience of spelling rules and non-phonetic words simple and accessible. They explain the main function final e using a special technique: using only words CVC that can turn into a new word with the addition of the final e.
Note: the CVC words are outlined with pink and the final e words are outlined with green to correspond to the Montessori Pink and Green Series materials and either fit in with or begin your language materials area of your classroom or homeschool. This work is most often utilized with 5-6 year old children.
Pre-requisite: children are ready for this activity when they can identify each letter symbol along with its name and primary sound. For vowels, they should also know there are long and short sounds and can hear the difference by ear.
How to use this resource:
There are three parts to this resource:
1. CVC to Silent / Final E Flip lists – you can keep these as full sheets and only fold and cut on the dotted line, or cut them into strips to isolate specific vowels if needed. I suggest introducing at least one of each vowel sound to begin.
2. CVC to Silent E Pictures and Words – I have created 3 versions of this with color, traceable and independent writing versions depending on how comfortable a child is with writing and identifying the images. The color word version can also be used as a control chart when working with picture cards and the moveable alphabet.
3. CVC to Silent E Picture Cards – these are larger versions of the cards that can be used with the flip list strips where applicable or the moveable alphabet.
